The Map tab on Market Monitor shows the S&P 500 on one screen.
Reading it
- Size is market cap. Apple and Nvidia are the big blocks; a $15B company is a small square.
- Color is the day's move. Green is up and red is down, and the color gets stronger up to 3% either way. Past 3% the shade stays the same, so read the number on the tile.
- Gray means flat. A darker gray tile has no move to show yet, usually a name that has not traded.
- Blocks are sectors, and the smaller blocks inside them are industries. The figure beside a sector's name is the sector's move weighted by market cap, the way an index moves.
- A white dot in a tile's corner means the company reports earnings today or on the next trading day.
Which day it shows
While the market is open the map shows today's move so far and updates every minute. After the close it shows the day's finished move. Before the open it shows the last session, and the line above the map says which day that was. After-hours moves are not on the map.
Using it
- Hover a tile to see its chart, with chart peek turned on and on plans that include it.
- Click a tile to open the stock. The arrow keys then step through the map in order, block by block.
- Click a sector's name to show only that sector. All sectors or Escape goes back.
On a phone the map starts as a list of sectors. Tap one to see its map.
