Workspace: the list beside a chart

Workspace puts the list you are working beside a live chart, with a third pane under the list showing the name you have selected. Pick a row and all of it follows that name. The list stays where it is, so reading two hundred names is one pass down the page instead of two hundred open-and-close.

It is on the Calendar (Day view), the Screener, and Movers, from the Table / Charts / Workspace buttons in the toolbar. Desktop only, because the layout needs the width. It is part of a Pro plan, and on the calendar it is open during a trial as well.

The calendar opens in it

On the calendar, Workspace is the layout you get unless you have picked another one, and the day's first company is selected for you so the panes have something to show. Charts and Table are one click away and whichever you pick is remembered.

The buttons also appear in Week view, where Table is the one selected, because five columns of names is all the week has. Clicking Workspace or Charts there takes you into the day.

The screener and Movers still open as a table. Workspace is a button there, not their default.

Walking the list

Up and down arrows move the selection, and on the screener and Movers j and k do the same if you prefer them. A row already on screen stays where it is, so a slow walk down the list does not jump about. Clicking a row selects it too.

On the calendar the letter keys are spoken for: s opens the filters and y marks the selected name reviewed.

The Layout menu

The icon beside the Workspace button opens it.

Chart on Left / Right applies everywhere. Wherever you like the chart, that is where it is on all three surfaces.

Under the list is chosen per surface, because the question is different on each:

• Earnings and guidance - the quarters, the estimates, and what management told the street to expect. The default on the calendar and the screener.
• Latest news - what the selected name has said since the prior close. The default on Movers, where the reason something is moving is usually a story. For a quiet name the pane offers to look further back, which is one lookup rather than something we spend on every row you scroll past.
• Nothing - hands the space back to the list.

Drag the divider between any two panes to resize them, and the sizes are remembered.

One difference worth knowing

On the calendar, clicking a row also drops that name's headlines into the list itself. That is deliberate: with the estimates pane below, one click gives you the numbers and the news at the same time. On the screener and Movers a click only selects, and the pane below is where the detail goes.

If you set the calendar's pane to Latest news, the row stops dropping headlines - they would be the same stories twice on one screen.

News markers

The dot in the News column stays whatever the pane is showing. It marks the names with a story since the prior close, across the whole list at once, which is a different question from what one name is saying. When the pane is already showing news, hovering the dot no longer opens its card - the pane has the same headlines, in more room.
